Checking in with your participant at the beginning and throughout the lesson, is a great way to foster their emotional development and help you tailor your lesson to how they are feeling.

This is a foundational skill to teach and once this has been embedded, we can build on this emotional development by asking something similar to, ‘So you feel sad. What do we do when we feel sad?’.
